How Coastwl came to be...

One fateful evening in October, I returned to my car after a surf only to realize that I had forgotten to bring a towel. The only thing I had with me was an old, extremely worn out t-shirt, which was not going to do much to dry me off. I accepted my fate of getting the seat of my car drenched, but thought to myself, "If only I had clothes made out of towels..."

The idea got stuck in my head. I thought more and more about it for a few weeks, until one day I decided to test it out. I picked up a thrifted towel on my way home from work, borrowed my friend's sewing machine, and made myself a pair of shorts. They were comfy, cozy and functional. I was obsessed! I picked up a few more towels and proceeded to make myself a bucket hat, a top, and a pair of overalls.

Pretty soon I was wearing my towel clothes almost every day and was overwhelmed at the response I got from people that saw my work. Everyone was requesting some clothes of their own! So I set to work perfecting my designs so that I could start a business.

I launched Coastwl in August of 2022! I still thrift all of my towel material because the thrift stores are filled with lightly used towels that I would prefer to turn into lovable, functional clothing items, rather than having them just sit there until they get thrown out. Additionally, it means that all of the items I create are uniquely one-of-one!

This is a very small business that I run by myself. All pieces are handmade and released in small batches as I make them. I appreciate you being here! Enjoy!
